Although the soil is mixed to provide optimal soil nutrients, as your garden grows the nutrients will be used by the plants to give you optimal nourishment. A balanced vegetable fertilizer should be used an a regular basis following the instructions given on the product container. For Portable Gardens that contain greens, a regular application of nitrogen will keep the plants happier, and you healthier.
WHEN TO HARVEST
For those new to gardening, knowing when to harvest is something that is not thought about right away, and will be different for each type of plant.
* Lettuce: leaves are 3″-6″ long
* Mizuna: leaves are at least 3″ long
* Arugula: leaves are 6″ tall
* Beet leaves: 1″ to 3″ long
* Tatsoi: leaves are at least 4″ long
* Herb Celery: outer stalks, up to 1/3 of a plant about 1″-2″ above the soil, when the stalks are at least 6″ tall
To harvest, use kitchen shears or small pruners, cutting the outer leaves or stalks. The inner part of the plant needs to be left to continue growing for continued harvests.
