History
Recent genetics research to determine the origination of the tomato indicates that the cherry-sized version of this fruit originated in Ecuador around 80,000 years ago. There is no indication that humans were involved in this part of the domestication process.
Eventually, the people in South America began to cultivate these early tomatoes, but did not develop the larger fruit we see today. Over time, these cherry-sized fruits spread northward, either from human movement, by birds, or some combination.
It was these smaller fruited plants that were then later domesticated into what we recognize today by the people who lived in the Maya Lowlands in the Yucatan Peninsula, the southern states of Mexico, the country of Guatemala, western Honduras, and part of El Salvador.
Uses
These are ways you can use this plant in your landscape or farm:
* potager or kitchen garden
* in pots or containers
* hanging baskets
Design
You can place the patio tomato plant in sunny locations, receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight, or more. When grown in pots and various types of containers, the plant can be planted with flowers and herbs, for a decorative and easy to access patio or deck kitchen garden.
Benefits
By choosing the Patio Tomato, you will have a tasty reliable harvest. The fruit is a perfect size for salads, and the plant fits into most small space areas.
A benefit of this variety of tomato is it’s compact size. To gain the largest nutritional benefit, heating red tomatoes makes lycopene available to the body. Another benefit to this variety of tomato is the fruits flavor, and when heated, it is intensified.

Parting Thoughts
Always water the base of the plant and not the leaves. Fertilize with organic fertilizer when the first fruits begin to appear, and then again when first tomato is picked. The Patio Tomato is Disease Resistant to: ASC, FW, and GLS.
ABOUT LYCOPENE
Lycopene acts on various biochemical pathways that help prevent cancer cells from developing and from spreading. Lycopene is higher in processed tomato foods (such as ketchup or canned tomatoes) because the processing involves removing water and leaving a more concentrated tomato product. NOTE: Tetra-cis-lycopene, found in many orange or tangerine colored tomato fruits, is another form of lycopene that is more easily absorbed by the body, with no heating or processing required for cancer fighting and prevention benefits.
